Nestled in an inconspicuous corner, the sizzle of pans fills the air as you walk by, and the smell of deep-fried pork chops mingles with the smell of Menudo and Munggo—an unmistakable reminder that it’s Friday, when Munggo often graces the menu.

Upon entering, you’re greeted by the warm smile of the woman behind the counter, who asks about your exam, your job interview, or your day at work. She encourages you to choose an ulam and have a seat at the table.

You can’t quite remember when you started calling her ‘Nay.’ At first, it was just ‘Manang,’ but perhaps it changed during those tight-budget days when you craved a hearty meal. She would offer a complimentary banana, sensing your need, or maybe it was during one of those stressful nights at work when her Lugaw was bursting with chicken bits, and extra egg mixed in. Those small gestures brought you comfort, reminding you of a mother’s love, and before you knew it, ‘Manang’ had turned into ‘Nay’—a change she embraced without a second thought.

“Manang to Nay” is a tribute to these women who, with their nurturing spirit, claim their customers as their own children. They are quiet institutions, witnesses to countless stories—students who graduate with honors, employees who earn their well-deserved promotions. A swell of pride fills their hearts, knowing they played a small part in these achievements, met with countless heartfelt “Salamat po, Nay!” that they can no longer count.

To many, she is a nanay—a mother figure serving affordable, comforting meals in an unassuming corner of a lively community. And she continues on, ready to serve another person.—Hey Mady! (@heymady)
