“Shelf-care is Community Care”

For Women’s Month, we chose to honor and re/emphasize the care and labor of collective memory-keeping. The image forefronts women collectively sifting and sorting through papers, archives, and printed media, while folding zines here and there: a usual and very comforting scene from our zine-making workshops. As lovers of zines and other tactile crafts and ephemera, it was very empowering for us to learn that historically, women were at the forefront of self-publishing and zine-making. During Martial Law, women led the publishing of truths and other counter-narratives through the “mosquito presses” to resist against the lies and disinformation spewed by the regime. Almost half a decade after the dictator’s ouster, the Riot Grrrl Movement of women punks flourished and utilized zines to assert and reclaim their voices and spaces to resist against the white male-dominated underground punk scene. Many more examples of these types of resistance can be seen throughout history.

Even until now, women are at the frontlines of truth-telling. From them we have learned: remembering again and again is an act of care, resistance, and liberation.
