Salon sa Hapon is an ode to the local rescue community, to new cat parents finding their rhythm, and my rescued cats, Bada and Sampaguita. I wanted to show the quiet joy of coexisting with animals. The scene draws from the stretch of small salons and barbershops along Luzon Avenue. I often pass by one salon that shelters stray cats who now live peacefully inside. It’s a daily sight I look forward to whenever I pass by the street.
This also celebrates Adopt-A-Cat Month, which promotes local rescue and rehabilitation efforts in the Philippines. Countless cats in shelters and on the streets wait patiently to be chosen and cared for. In recent years, a growing number of rescue groups have been working to educate communities about the importance of TNVR (Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return), especially in neighborhoods, barangays, and even universities. I’m deeply inspired by small groups like Kapon Ampon, Bark Mission, DLSU PUSA, and GatchooFam, as well as by my peers Tibby the Tortie and P. Ramos, for their continuous efforts such as daily feeding rotations, fostering, and finding loving homes for rescued cats. They are a reminder that small acts of compassion can change lives. — Alyssa Babasa (@babsilog)
